4. Develop Your Tentative Guest List
   

   This important step will have the biggest impact on your total budget. Coming up with a “budget” for your wedding before figuring out how many people you want to invite is a pointless exercise.

   Selecting the right type of food is essential to a great wedding. It’s the most remembered part of any wedding, more than the dress, décor, etc.

7. Shop for your Dress / Tuxedo / Bridal Party Attire
   

   This is the step the majority of brides agonize over, despite many having thought about their preferred choice for years! It is also the step where price tags are often suddenly hard to find. Be cautious, do your research and choose the look that makes you happy. Confidence is beautiful!

8. Shop for your Entertainment
   

   Band or D.J? String quartet or harpist? Choose what best fits your theme and tastes. Remember to ask for a demo tape or video clip of them in action at a wedding!

9. Shop for your Photographer/Videographer
   

   Capturing the event for the history books is an important part of your wedding day. Make sure you go through the portfolio of anyone you are considering. Calibre of talent varies widely in this area. A good camera does not necessarily make a good photographer!

10. Shop for your Florist
    

    Focus on large, memorable floral groupings vs. small bits here and there. Think of all the weddings you’ve been to and try to remember the flowers…can’t do it? Not surprising. Eco-tip: Remember that you’ll keep the bouquet and the rest will likely end up in a land-fill.

11. Shop for your Cake
    

    Taste test, taste test, taste test! Try them all (free samples are always available at wedding shows) and go with a cake that tastes as good as it looks.

12. Determine Your Budget!
    

    Now that you have shopped around to see how much the elements of your dream wedding actually cost, total it all up and determine what the overall budget looks like it will need to be, based on your tentative guest count.

    You may find you can spend less than you imagined, or that you will have to spend more than you have. If the latter, reducing guest count is the simplest option. Adjusting your personal tastes and choosing less expensive decorative elements is also an option, but will require that you go through the shopping process again to refine the quotes you’ve already collected.

Once you’ve determined your wedding budget, keep it to yourself when getting initial quotes!

Industry professionals and suppliers should begin by finding out what your needs, interests and tastes are.  They should then discuss/present their menu of options and generate a detailed quote showing you what the costs are for the items/options/services you are interested in.  This is not a time intensive process.  It should be efficient, painless and informative.  

You should be able to take home their quote to mull over the costs and determine whether it fits into your overall budget.  Don’t get pressured, shamed or bullied into revealing your budget prematurely, as this routinely results in spending more than you need to.

If you ask a supplier how much something costs and their first response is “What’s your budget?” (put another way “How much do you have?”), followed by a reluctance/refusal to assist you further until a figure has been disclosed, we strongly urge you to walk away.   The level of customer service and attention required to prep a quote should not differ based on how much someone has to spend.  

Beware wedding suppliers that do not have published prices for their products/services! The cost of standard items should not vary from client to client - period.
